Hypnosis... the very word conveys fear in many.  We either envision some peculiar looking man waving around a pendulum or a group of people on stage being made to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog. Both of these imagines suggest that a hypnotist can control your mind and your behavior – against your will.  Nothing could be further from the truth. No one, no matter how skilled they may be, can ever use hypnosis to control you. You give your permission when you are being hypnotized. In reality, all hypnosis, whether performed by a trained professional, a stage performer, or an individual on themselves is self-hypnosis. You are always in control. Since you are always in control, you will not do anything that will violate your moral code or belief system. “In a moment I will begin to count backward from 10-1 and as I do you will go deeper and deeper into a state of comfortable relaxation”…  With hypnotic suggestion, clients begin to make changes in their lives that support their own growth and choice.

It is not a parlor trick; hypnotherapy is a powerful healing tool!  Hypnotherapy has been credited with alleviating pain in burn victims, eliminating pain in childbirth, relieving asthma and anxiety, as well as treating depression, fears and phobias.  It has tremendous power for those wishing to quit smoking, lose weight, or make profound changes in their personal or professional lives.  It is widely used to enhance performance in athletes.

Our mind is the center of our very complex nervous system. Networks of nerve cells run throughout the body, connecting every tissue to our mind. Electrical impulses travel along these pathways at high speeds leaping across narrow gaps between cells, relaying information to and from our mind. Our mind itself has two parts, a conscious and subconscious. Most of us are pretty familiar with the conscious mind. It organizes and runs our outer life. But many of our decisions that affect our life actually come from our subconscious. The subconscious is very powerful and has many functions.

The snap judgment.  The song that constantly runs through your head.  The preference for Pepsi over Coke, or to drive a Toyota rather than a Ford.  The feeling that something is wrong, or the immediate like or dislike for another person you barely know.  This is the evidence that your subconscious mind is constantly at work. These experiences are all superficially unrelated, although each one shows us that there is constantly some work going on inside of us on a level deeper than our own consciousness.  We are complicated, as human beings, and there are many aspects to us that we are unable to touch, on a conscious level, without help.  Hypnotherapy is that help!

It has been shown that roughly 5% of the population is not responsive to hypnosis, and another 5% are extremely sensitive and go very deep into trance during hypnotherapy.  Most of the population falls somewhere in-between.  Hypnosis is simply a deep level of relaxation that allows a client to block out distractions, allowing the conscious mind to “check out” and begin connecting with the information that lies deeply within the subconscious.

Several studies using positron emission tomography (PET) have looked at what is going on in the brain during hypnosis.  In one, hypnotized subjects had their hands immersed in “painfully hot” water but were told it was comfortably warm.  This not only altered their perception of the pain, but also altered blood flow in pain-related parts of the brain.  In another study, highly hypnotizable people were shown a black and white pattern and asked to see color.  The results… the regions of the brain normally activated during color perception were activated in the subjects being studied.

You can easily learn this, and once you master this technique, you open the door to great potential. It has been estimated that the average human being uses 3 to 7% of their mind's capacity. By using hypnosis you can learn to operate your wonderful bio computer. Your mind holds the key to your health.
