The fad diet, the get rich quick scheme, the New Years Resolution…  What do they all have in common?  For the majority of us they just don’t work!  Making real change in our lives is about changing the way we move through the world.  It’s about seeing with new eyes and making new decisions about how we want our lives to be.  Those methods mentioned above don’t work because they are external factors attempting to change INTERNAL ways of being.

Change is perhaps the only constant in the universe.  We are all in a state of change.  Then why is it so difficult for most of us to make changes we desire in our lives.  Why are those New Year’s Resolutions doomed to be on our list again next year?

Most of the change we seek out in our lives is about moving away from discomfort.  Change requires motivation and if we are motivated to move away from discomfort we begin the process of change.  Herein lies the problem.  As we begin to make change successfully in our lives, however small that may be, the discomfort we experience decreases.  As the discomfort decreases, so does our motivation.  In contrast, when we begin change as a method to achieve a goal, our motivation and excitement continue to increase as we grow closer to success.

While motivation is key in making permanent change in our lives, having clarity about what we want is how we know when we are beginning to achieve our goals.  With that clarity we gain awareness of our small successes along the way.

In the process of change “will-power” has always been credited with success or failure.  Will-power is a facet of our conscious mind and is capable of amazing things.  We have all heard the story of the mother that lifted the automobile off of her small child – pure will-power being the author of such strength.  Christopher Reeves drive to live and thrive in the face of tremendous obstacles in many ways is attributed to his will-power.  For most of us, however, will-power simply isn’t enough.

When we are considering changes that are deeply rooted, we often discover that continued long term success requires more than will-power.  As soon as our will-power wanes we return to old behaviors because they are deeply engrained in who we are.  They are learned behaviors and patterns that we are programmed to return to.  We can temporarily override them with will-power but our internal programs are patient and when our will-power begins to dissolve away, our program continues.  Understanding those programs and the purpose they have served in our lives can assist in creating powerful change and continued success.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for discovery in that process.  When we clearly imagine desired outcomes we immediately begin to experience the benefits of that image.  Have you ever experienced great joy at the memory of an event or person in your life or sorrow at the thought of a lost loved one?  This is the power of our perceptions and the effect they have on our reality.  By focusing our attention on a desired outcome framed as a goal, we enhance our ability for change.

In reality, it is very simple:  we have internal programs that are constantly at work.  They will perform perfectly whether we are making choices consciously or unconsciously.  We are all making the movies of our lives.  We are the writers, the producers, the casting directors and the leading ladies and gentleman.  We get one chance at making the movie of a lifetime.  The question I ask is simply – is this the movie the movie of your dreams?  If not, consciously rewrite your manuscript!  Change the plot, write in new characters, add details, and most importantly, write a beautiful happy ending…

When considering New Years Resolutions for 2006, consider throwing them out the window.  Begin shifting your reality by thinking in terms of life change and moving toward the POSITIVE rather than away from the negative. In 2006 consider mastering your own motivation, defining the desires of your heart, accessing your abilities and recognizing your achievements…  These steps will allow us all to realize greater success in our lives and to make permanent change the order of the day.
